Bartending vs. the Economy

The answer….GREAT!

People will always find a way to afford the things they WANT or things that make them FEEL good. With this in mind it’s no surprise that alcohol is at the top of the list. Whether its celebrating a new job or trying to forget the one that just fired you, bars and nightclubs will always have eager patrons, so what does this mean for you?

Well, for those of you who are aspiring bartenders this means there has never been a better time to learn bartending….actually, ANY time is a good time to learn bartending. As I’ve always said, bartending is one of the most profitable skills anyone can learn and like riding a bike once you learn the basics you’ll never forget.

Now what this does NOT mean is that finding a job will be easy. Finding a job behind the bar is quite competitive, but then again it’s ALWAYS been competitive. So your best bet is going to be in your approach by staying consistent. I would also recommend reading the article in this blog titled “How to Land a Bartending Job in Los Angeles” and pay special attention to tip #5 “Follow Up.”

By consistently following up you will demonstrate to the bar manager that you’re not a flake. One of the biggest problems in this industry is that bartenders tend to “flake” or become seduced by the amount of cash they handle and start stealing. Actually, I landed my first bartending job this way. I had ZERO experience, but consistenly kept putting the word out that I was eager to bartend (Meahwhile I was learning the basics on my own at home so I would be ready). Finally the day came when I got a call from a friend who said the bartender at her job was caught stealing and the need someone to start TOMORROW! She remember who I was persistenly pursing a bartending spot and told the owner about me and how I was persistent and woudn’t be caught dead stealing. Long story short, that’s how I began.

So as I was saying, Learning drink recipies is the easy part, but if you can convnice a bar manager that your trustworthy you stand a much higher chance of breaking in. That’s right, I said trustworthy, not a bartending school graduate or a flair expert. Now combine trustworthy with a great personality and it won’t be long before you find your self Behind The Bar. Good luck out there and let us know how we can help
